Italian renaissance captured in design

Fullerton College Hornet  - Mercedes Acosta - Monday, October 16th, 1995

In order for a production to be realistic in the eyes of spectators, actors must be dressed in appropriate attire.

Approximately 125 full costumes have been constructed for the 1995 fall production of "Romeo and Juliet."

Mela Hoyt-Heydon, costume design instructor of the Theater Arts Department, was the costume designer for the production.

The costume design instructor, Hoyt-Heydon wears many hats as costume designer, shop foreman, shopper, cutter, and pattern maker.

"Romeo and Juliet" has been set in the Renaissance Era, all 125 costumes were made of velvet, silk, linen, and borque, made authentic to the Italian Renaissance time period.

Costumes were constructed by Fullerton College's night Theatrical Costume class.

The students spent many weeks working to construct the costumes.

They did everything from fitting the costume to the actors comfort, to going to dress rehearsals on the Monday and Tuesday prior to opening night, Oct. 12.
