FC presents a timeless tale

Fullerton College Hornet  - Shalimar Cruz - Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

The Fullerton College Theatre Department will be bringing a classic American novel to life when "To Kill A Mockingbird opens tomorrow night at 8 p.m. in the Campus Theater.

The classic novel has been shortened to accommodate the standard three-hour time frame of theatrical productions, however the important lessons within the story are able to remain intact.

The play is narrated by an older version of the story's focal character Scout, who is played by Mackenzie Orr.

She transports the audience to the small town of Maycomb, Alabama as she recounts memories concerning a court case that occurred there during the era of the Great Depression.

The consternation of the play is that Maycomb is a racist white community, while the 'court case involves a black townsman that .has been accused of raping a white woman.

Atticus, Scout's father, agrees to defend the accused man, Tom Robinson, a decision that greatly affects Scout and her brother Jem.

Scout shares her perceptions on the townspeople's deep ruriing bigotry, which is laid bare through the injustice of Robinson's case.

The Fine Arts Departmerit chose to do "To Kill A Mockingbird" this year because the wanted to have "A season of diversity" said director of the production, Chuck Ketter.

The cast of 35 has been rehearsing steadily for the past seven weeks in preparation for Thursday's opening night.

In addition to opening night, "To Kill A Mockingbird"' will be performed on Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m., while an additional matinee performance will be given on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.

Tickets are available to students, seniors, and children for $12.50, while adults admission is $15.00. Ticket purchases can be made at the campus box office or by calling the FC Theatre Arts Department at (714) 992-7150.
