Beginning tomorrow, and running through Sunday, November 12, the Fullerton College Theatre Arts Department will run two plays written by Nicky Silver. "Fat Men In Skirts" and "Raised In Captivity" are both dark, warped explorations of human nature and relationships.Gary Krinke is directing both plays, which will be performed on a single stage which will serve both productions with flash and pizzazz.

This is a rare opportunity for FC students, because along with October's "Cyrano de Bergerac," three plays will have been produced by the Theatre Arts Department by the end of this semester. Opportunities for students interested in theater are seldom this plentiful.

"Fat Men In Skirts" juxtaposes horror and comedy elements on a desert island. The plot is moved forward through flashbacks that tell the story of a mother and son, and their strange journey to and from civilization.

The stage design is minimalistic, in order to support both plays. The audience surrounds the stage on two sides, and the plays are designed to be enjoyed from any angle.

Assistant Stage Manager Andrew Pagan is especially excited about Krinke's vision.

"He thinks big," Pegan said. "Not only are you feeding off of the play; you're feeding off of the audience's reaction in front of you."

Featuring a Vanity Fair writer, a dentist, and a painter, "Raised In Captivity" is another dark comedy from Silver. The twin productions are comedies of similar style, and both are poised to shock audiences, as well as make them chuckle.

"Fat Men In Skirts" begins Thursday, November 9 at 8:00 p.m., and "Raised In Captivity" plays on Friday, also at 8:00 p.m. Both productions play Saturday and Sunday, with shows beginning at 2:00 p.m. both nights.
