DIRECTOR’S NOTE
Romeo & Juliet is one of Shakespeare’s most-produced plays for a reason: this story is full of thrilling fights, outrageous comedy, and knee-buckling love scenes. It is also about brilliant, vibrant young people full of life, fighting for their space in a violent world and aching to change the status quo. So setting it in the early 1970s felt like the right fit. The world was buzzing with change and constant upheaval. Violent uprisings were common, civil rights movements were in full swing, students were beaten (or worse) on college campuses for protesting, and young people everywhere were fighting for their right to love who they wanted to love, be who they wanted to be, and live the life they wanted to live against enormous odds. Romeo and Juliet are doing just that, as are Mercutio and Benvolio, and every other young person in this play. They aren’t perfect, all of them make mistakes. But they are reaching for a better world. And time and time again the adults in their lives fail them. Their parents, their mentors, and their caregivers fail them in big and small ways, intentionally and unintentionally. They fail them by ignoring them, dismissing them, diminishing them, and even sometimes by shielding them from the horrors of the world. It isn’t until much too late that the adults realize the answer was there all along: listen to these bright young minds, and love them as they are.

I have been blessed with a cast and crew full of bright young minds who have brought their whole selves to this process. Their boldness and bravery inspire me, as does the way they care for and uplift each other. This play would not be what it is without them and the contributions of every person on this incredible team. And for that, I am truly grateful. This show is a celebration of their spirit and a reminder to all of us to love our bright young minds unconditionally, as they are. Thanks for sharing this space with us, enjoy the show!

DRAMATURGICAL NOTE
There is perhaps no love story more known, more beloved, nor more performed than that of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Over the last three hundred years, this story of two young lovers and the turmoil they endure at the hands of their feuding families has captivated audiences, readers, and scholars. Whether it be watching one of the tale’s countless film iterations, reading the story as part of an English course, or attending a theatrical production of the play, it is almost impossible for one to avoid the immeasurable impact - the sheer might - that this fictional love affair has had upon the world. Our production, set in early 1970s New York City, seeks to highlight much more than the tragedy of this tale. We invite you as the audience to laugh, cry, hope, dance, sing, ponder, and fall in love with the world we have created here; you are hereby welcomed to our fair scene - one of political intrigue, civil unrest, abundant love, and a vast array of societal changes bubbling to the surface. Thank you for your support and participation. Enjoy.
