DIRECTOR’S NOTE
Cabaret has always been my favorite musical, not only for its brilliance in storytelling and music but for its chilling, unrelenting relevance. Set in the final days of the Weimar Republic, as Berlin teeters on the brink of fascism, this production serves as both a reflection of history and a mirror to our present.

In casting this production, I was intentional in showcasing the diverse communities that existed in Germany at this time, Jewish people, LGBTQIA2S+ individuals, immigrants, and people of color, all of whom were part of the fabric of Berlin and, later, victims of Nazi persecution. This is not just a story about what happened then; it is about what happens when people stop seeing one another as human.

One of the most haunting moments in Cabaret comes from Fraulein Schneider’s song “What Would You Do?” a plea from someone who has watched the world shift under her feet, who is forced to make impossible choices. It is a question that demands an answer from all of us. In an era where people are being taken from hospitals, schools, their homes and are detained, where even legal residents with green cards are being deported, we must ask ourselves: when fascism rises again, what will we do?

The parallels between 1936 and today are undeniable. The political landscape we find ourselves in is one of division, fear, and the dangerous belief that what happens to others does not concern us. But history warns us otherwise. Sitting back and believing it has nothing to do with you is a choice—a choice that allows oppression to take root.

As you watch this production, I hope it challenges you. I hope it unsettles you. And most of all, I hope it compels you to see the humanity in others—to resist apathy, to reject division, and to answer the question: What would you do?

DRAMATURGICAL NOTE
Cabaret takes us to 1930s Berlin, where life is a mix of wild parties, music, and a country in chaos. Set during the Weimar Republic, this world shows us how people were trying to escape their troubles, even as political and social unrest took over. As we watch, it’s hard not to notice the parallels between that time and our own world today.

Just like in Weimar Germany, the USA today is dealing with a lot of political division, economic struggles, and debates over social justice. Back then, Germany was facing the fallout from World War I and the rise of dangerous political movements, and now in America, we see similar divisions, with political extremes gaining attention and big challenges ahead.

In the 1930s, Berlin’s nightlife and cabaret scene were all about freedom of expression, while today, pop culture is a huge part of our lives through social media, movies, and music. But both eras also show us how people distract themselves from bigger problems around them. Whether it's dancing in Berlin or scrolling through our phones, we sometimes ignore the tough issues we need to face.

Cabaret isn’t just about history—it’s a reminder that the struggles of the past are still with us today. The fight for freedom, equality, and how we choose to live in times of uncertainty are questions that are still relevant. Watching this show, we’re asked: Will we just keep dancing through the chaos, or will we take a stand and face what’s happening around us? The choice is ours, then and now.
