DIRECTOR’S NOTE

“Reclaiming the Night”

Kate Hamill’s Dracula isn’t just an adaptation; it’s an exorcism; a reckoning; a sharp stake through the heart of a story that has long fed on fear, control, and silence. In this retelling, the women refuse to faint; instead, they rise. They fight. They reclaim their power from the monsters who would rather keep them in the dark.

Our production embodies Hamill’s blend of classic horror and biting humor, creating a thrilling, blood-drenched ride from repression toward liberation. We collide Victorian romanticism with contemporary urgency, merging the candlelit terror of Bram Stoker’s world with the pulse of modern resistance. The result is both familiar and strange, a fever dream where laughter curdles into a scream, and a scream breaks into laughter again.

Beneath the fangs and fog, this story is about revolution. Dracula is not just a monster; he’s a relic of power afraid of extinction. His fear mirrors our own world, where patriarchal systems still cling to dominance and attempt to silence progress. Mina, our central figure, learns that survival isn’t enough; confronting evil is necessary so that the next generation might live freer than the last.

Visually, the world unfolds as a dreamlike Gothic landscape; part castle, part asylum, part waking nightmare. Costumes gesture toward Victorian silhouettes, only to rip, stain, and evolve as characters transform. Light itself becomes a weapon, bathing the stage in blood, shadow, and vibrant revelation. The underscoring twists from the idyllic natural world to dissident pulses and unsettling undertones, fusing horror nostalgia with the immediacy of now. And yes, there will be blood. Not just for shock, but for symbolic release, a cathartic rebellion splattered across lace and linen.

The power of this story lives not only in its message but in the creative labor, collaboration, and community that brought it to life. Our ensemble, composed of extraordinary student actors, designers, and technicians, worked side by side with faculty mentors and professional artists to build this haunting, visceral world. Every drop of blood, every flicker of light, every transformation you witness is the product of collective imagination, discipline, and joy.

Dracula: A Feminist Revenge Fantasy, Really reminds us that even when the night feels endless, dawn is inevitable, but only if we fight for it. The monsters of oppression do not vanish on their own. They are staked, repeatedly, by those brave enough to reclaim the night.

Fullerton College is located on the unceded ancestral lands shared by the Gabrielino-Tongva Nation and the Juaneño Band of Mission Indians/Acjachemen Nation, who have been the traditional caretakers since time immemorial. Tongva and Acjachemen peoples maintain a strong presence in North Orange County and throughout Southern California, protecting their homelands, knowledge systems, and cultures for the next seven generations. We acknowledge the ingenuity, survival, resilience, and strength of their descendants and relatives––past, present, and emerging. We also acknowledge the labor of those who work on and care for these lands, both in the past and today, and all those who act in solidarity with Indigenous struggles.
