DIRECTOR’S NOTE

The dramaturgical origin of Anon(ymous) is profoundly meaningful to me. As a theatre scholar, I am drawn to mythology and global storytelling traditions, but Greek mythology has a way of gripping us with its sweeping scale and dynamic stories.

In Naomi Iizuka’s Anon(ymous), we embark on a journey alongside Anon as he searches for his mother—drifting through oceans, slipping between realms, and discovering worlds shaped by longing and survival. Along the way, he encounters other displaced souls, each mirroring his struggle and amplifying the urgency of his quest.

My vision for Anon(ymous) embraces a global tapestry of stories. We honor Indigenous foundations through Taíno mythology and uplift the African Diaspora by weaving in Yorùbá mythic traditions. These influences, along with additional cultural nods from around the world, are intentionally woven throughout the production. Our process has been fueled by joy, curiosity, and collaboration—an educational journey shaped by meaningful partnerships.

Through Anon’s odyssey, I strive to illuminate the experiences of the displaced, the migrant, and the refugee—to honor lives too often unheard and reveal how powerfully their stories echo within our own communities.

As a director, my hope is that Anon(ymous) becomes more than a compelling piece of theatre; I hope it becomes a mirror—inviting every audience member to recognize a piece of themselves reflected onstage.
Enjoy the show!

Fullerton College is located on the unceded ancestral lands shared by the Gabrielino-Tongva Nation and the Juaneño Band of Mission Indians/Acjachemen Nation, who have been the traditional caretakers since time immemorial. Tongva and Acjachemen peoples maintain a strong presence in North Orange County and throughout Southern California, protecting their homelands, knowledge systems, and cultures for the next seven generations. We acknowledge the ingenuity, survival, resilience, and strength of their descendants and relatives–past, present, and emerging. We also acknowledge the labor of those who work on and care for these lands, both in the past and today, and all those who act in solidarity with Indigenous struggles.

Our Ethnic Studies Department has created a list of action items, groups, and organizations to support, as well as educational resources found at:
