DIRECTOR’S NOTE
One of the enduring joys of Gilbert and Sullivan is their ability to tell an entertaining story while gently exposing the absurdities of society’s rules. Their operettas are celebrated for parodying the customs that govern rank, authority, duty, and respectability. Police officers tremble, pirates follow rigid codes of honor, and a Major General can appear impressive while knowing very little at all.

This adaptation was shaped collaboratively with the students. Together, we explored how the story might unfold if reimagined on Catalina Island in the late 1950s, a moment when Southern California tourism was expanding, and the island was becoming an iconic destination for recreation and escape.

The Catalina frame became more than a visual concept. Students contributed ideas about staging, character behavior, and the world of the play, helping to create an environment that feels playful, recognizable, and distinctly Californian while preserving the spirit of Gilbert and Sullivan’s operetta. Along the way, we even revisited the famous leap year arithmetic, which in our timeline places Frederic’s birth in 1936 as the story neatly arrives in 1957.

Most of all, this production reflects the imagination and commitment of the students who have embraced both the musical demands of Gilbert and Sullivan and the creative challenge of reimagining the piece for a new place and time. It is also the work of a remarkable creative team of students and staff whose design, choreography, musical direction, stage management, and technical artistry have helped bring this vision to life. Performing the work with live musicians brings a special vitality to the stage, allowing singers and instrumentalists to listen closely and shape each moment together. In that spirit, we hope tonight’s company proves a very model of collaborative music making, theatrical invention, and a touch of piratical mischief.

Enjoy, and welcome aboard!

Fullerton College is located on the unceded ancestral lands shared by the Gabrielino-Tongva Nation and the Juaneño Band of Mission Indians/Acjachemen Nation, who have been the traditional caretakers since time immemorial. Tongva and Acjachemen peoples maintain a strong presence in North Orange County and throughout Southern California, protecting their homelands, knowledge systems, and cultures for the next seven generations. We acknowledge the ingenuity, survival, resilience, and strength of their descendants and relatives––past, present, and emerging. We also acknowledge the labor of those who work on and care for these lands, both in the past and today, and all those who act in solidarity with Indigenous struggles.

Our Ethnic Studies Department has created a list of action items, groups, and organizations to support, as well as educational resources found at:
